Where were the black actors? I guess they didn’t think we were available to read teleprompters that night.”
- Samuel L. Jackson commenting on the lack of black male presenters.
I think Halle Berry & Oprah were there, but that’s it. I don’t watch the Oscars mainly because of reasons like this — it’s whitewashed. That, and the fact that we’re again watching millionaires get celebrated for doing their jobs, that we pay them millions to do. I would actually be slightly embarrassed if I was an actor receiving an award. “Yeah, thanks. It means a lot to be recognized for my job, unlike most Americans who do theirs 5 days a week with little to no hoopla. Thanks for the millions!” Back to the topic though, this isn’t just about the lack of black presenters, but every other race. Hispanic, Asian, etc. There’s still this racial disparity in Hollywood that doesn’t look to ever get better. People of color are rarely casted in roles that can give them a chance to win an Oscar, or if so, maybe Best Supporting. That year Denzel & Halle won? Give me a break. Denzel should’ve had one for Malcolm X. In fact, I can name tons of movies that should’ve had nominations and/or winners. And this actually makes me slightly support some of these ignorant awards shows the black community has. *cough* Source Awards *cough* We have to have SOMETHING I guess.
Unfortunately there is racial and gender disparity in everything, especially in this society. Unless we speak out and people stop watching these shows it’s not going to change.
